High Liner Foods Introduces Whole-Grain Seafood Products for K-12 School Districts

New USDA-compliant products to be featured at annual School Nutrition Association conference in July

DANVERS, Mass., July 12, 2012 /CNW/ - High Liner Foods (USA) Inc., the leading value-added seafood supplier in North America, announced today that it has introduced a new line of whole grain-rich seafood products that will help K-12 school districts enhance their healthy meal offerings to meet new U.S. Department of Agriculture nutritional standards. The products will be exhibited for the first time at the School Nutrition Association Annual National Conference in Denver, from July 15-18, 2012.

In January 2012, the USDA unveiled the new school meal nutrition standards based on the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which was advocated for by First Lady Michelle Obama. The new standards are to be phased in beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. Among the new requirements are a significant increase in whole grain-rich food offerings, and changes to portion sizes based on the age of school children.

The new High Liner products include:

  • USDA Commodity Alaska Pollock (High Liner label), including whole grain breaded nuggets, sticks and fish-shaped nuggets (1 oz) and portions (3.6 oz);
  • Viking brand Alaska Pollock, including whole grain breaded nuggets, sticks and fish-shaped nuggets (1 oz) and portions (3.6 oz);

“According to the USDA, a diet rich in whole grains can help achieve weight loss and reduce the risk of some chronic diseases,” said Jim LaBelle, Vice President of Foodservice Marketing for High Liner Foods (USA) Inc. “High Liner’s new whole grain-rich offerings will make it easier for school districts to serve delicious and healthy seafood offerings that students will love.”

K-12 school foodservice directors who’d like to find out more about the new High Liner whole grain-rich products can visit High Liner Foods at Booth #1313, at the SNA national conference. They can also contact Ned Hawkins, K-12 Sales Manager, at 978-750-5276.
